Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia in Austria can be found on Lake Worthersee and is a truly lovely place. Known as the Rose of Lake Worthersee, with its restaurants, beautiful fountains and hotels Klagenfurt is a wonderful destination for tourists.
One of the main times of the year to visit is surely mid-November through December for the unmissable ChristKindl, or Christmas, market. In a region renowned for its markets at this time of year, Klagenfurt's stands out and is renowned as one of the most picturesque. It is held against the back drop of the Lindwurm, one of Klagenfurt's most famous sights within the Neur Platz public square. Visitors and locals are treated to a feast of Christmas magic with the evocative smells of baked apples and gluhwein, cinnamon cookies and mulled wine filling the air. Traditional gifts and crafts can be purchased including wooden carvings and handmade wooden toys. The city takes great pride in its Christmas celebrations and is bedecked with lights and a huge Christmas tree.
Set on a hillside with views over the beautiful Austrian countryside Klagenfurt is full of things to see and do. Medieval buildings nestle happily with later architecture giving the place a fairytale feel with many gothic style turrets and towers adding interest. Lovers of churches and cathedrals have many beautiful buildings to choose from. There are over 50 churches and chapels to enjoy. The 15th century pilgrimage church which was built on the foundations of a Roman Basilica is of particular interest holding a wealth of history. The ancient Magdalensburg has the remains of a settlement from the 1st century BC and is the oldest known Roman remains to be found anywhere in the alps. The remains of many buildings depicting everyday Roman life can be seen from temples through to baths and terraced houses. The splendor of the site itself is enhanced by museums that explain the history and exhibit ceramic, wood and marble artifacts. The Europapark offers visitors a different day out with a miniature town at a scale of 1 : 25 depicting detailed models of famous Austrian buildings and landmarks as well as some international buildings. A reptile zoo and planetarium can also be found here making it a good family destination.
For those wanting to transport themselves back to a time of knights and maidens, Klagenfurt provides an excellent background as it is surrounded by no less than 23 restored castle buildings of all shapes and sizes. Some of the luxury hotels Klagenfurt boasts are actually houses in these castle buildings. With some dating back as far as the 12th century with their great halls, towers and pinnacles, the atmosphere is special. Many of the castles also have beautiful parks and gardens to walk about in and some have exhibitions and interactive displays to bring the history to life for visitors.
Klagenfurt has beautiful waters to add to the tranquil setting. Lake Worthersee is a large expanse of water stretching from Klagenfurt to Velden. It is surrounded by beautiful dense Alpine forest with the added attraction of the Alps in the distance. Once the destination of choice for Austrian Nobles for their summer retreat, the lake now offers boat hire and beautiful walks. The Ossiacher Lake is the third largest in the region and is known for its balmy waters which rest at around 26 degrees Celsius in the summer months. Pretty little villages are dotted about its shores and are popular destinations for visitors. Ossiach itself was once the home to a Benedictine Monastery which was dissolved in the early 1900s. It now hosts the Carinthian Summer Music Festival. Austria is of course famous for its music making over the centuries and this is celebrated in elegant style here.
